Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2010, Ranked Number 1 Wine in the World by Wine Spectator
The 40th edition of Wine Spectator's New York Wine Experience, which was sold out this year and is often referred to as the Oscars of wine, has come to a close. At this year's event, more than 11,000 wines from every corner of the globe were tasted and competed for major accolades. The highest accolade, however, went to a Spanish wine.
Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2010, from the winery Marqués de Murrieta in La Rioja, was unanimously chosen as the number 1 wine in the world. It was also the only Spanish wine to rank in the top 10. At the awards ceremony, the winery's owner, Vicente Dalmau Cebrian-Sagarriga, described the award as "representing a major milestone for all Spanish wines as well as for Marqués de Murrieta and the family that is spearheading a project which represents quality and expertise from Spain." The tasting committee evaluated a wide range of properties, from quality and wineries' track records to a so-called "X factor," which takes into consideration the enthusiasm, passion, and feelings that a wine awakens in the tasters. According to Wine Spectator, Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva 2010 deserves to be crowned the World's Best Wine in view of " its history, its character and for reminding us about the value of commitment, hard work and perseverance."
